July 30, 1943 — August 28, 2024
Obituary of Sylvester ‘Bill’ Abdon Sandy
Today, we gather to celebrate the life of a remarkable man, Sylvester Abdon "Bill" San-
dy. A man known for his strength, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, mentor, and friend who touched countless lives with his words of wisdom and selfless acts of service.
Born on July 30th, 1943, on the small beautiful island of Petite Martinique, Grenada, Bill was the fourth child of Gregory Morris Sandy and Agnes Theodora Clement Sandy.
At just two years old, Bill and his family migrated to Trinidad, where his father found
work at the American base. It was here that Bill’s foundational values began to take
root—family, education, and the importance of a trade. He attended Fatima RC and
Nelson Street Boys RC School before furthering his education at the Progressive Education Institute. From a young age, Bill knew the value of hard work, especially learning a skill that would sustain him throughout life.
His love for learning and mastering a trade took him to England, where he studied at
the prestigious City and Guilds Institute and became a master electrician. It was during
this time that he met the love of his life, Angela Jarvis. Together, they built a family
and raised four children: Natasha, Andrea, Nicola, and Adrian. Bill’s career took him
to many countries, including Trinidad, England, and Saudi Arabia, where he worked as an electrical engineer for over 30 years. He ultimately settled in Baltimore, Maryland,
where he served as a Senior Electrical Inspector Supervisor for the City of Baltimore until his retirement from that role. He continued in business until his death.
Bill believed that everyone should have an education ; a skill or trade—a tool for independence. "If no one hires you, no one can fire you," he would often say. He passed down this wisdom to his children and grandchildren, as well as to the many people he mentored along the way. He valued education but was equally passionate about practical, hands-on learning. His vision lives on in the foundation that will be established in his honor—a foundation focused on offering grants and scholarships for those who want to learn a trade, attend college, or start their own business, especially in the trade professions.
Bill’s love language was acts of service and words of affirmation. He believed that
life was about giving back to the community and helping others rise. Whether it was
through fixing something, building alongside his father and uncles, or simply offering a kind word of encouragement, Bill always led with love. He would often remind his family and those around him of the power of community, service, and perseverance.
His deep, rumbling voice and the joy he found in building and fixing things became
part of his legacy—a man who could literally and figuratively build from the ground
up. His spirit lives on through his wife Angela, their children, grandchildren, and the countless people whose lives he touched.
Though he has left us physically, his love, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to
family and community will remain with us forever.
Bill was a man of integrity, a jack-
of-all-trades, and above all, a man of love. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Rest in peace, Sylvester "Bill" Sandy. Your legacy lives on in all of us.

God is Love I’ve lost my sail, my anchor and my Compass..Daddy Andrea was with mummy and daddy in AprilI and I spent 5 weeks with mummy and Daddy in July. One of the last comments he had about our relationship was..I like how you and Andrea live…it reminds me of me and Ken…that is real Sandy family..that’s how we live … And so I wanted to share what I thought of his famous saying…GOD IS LOVE Daddy would often make the statement, end a conversation, email, letter or text with ‘God is LOVE’. Since his sudden passing I have reflected for hours about this statement and the meaning for him and for us.. Daddy was a natural teacher, leader and source of wisdom..who had a serious face..with a powerful and unforgettable voice..Daddy’s presence ALWAYS felt HUGE!! I believe when Daddy often said ‘God is Love’ he also mean’t that the feeling of Love is to know God!! He was a wise, distinct and humble soul..Rich in the qualities he possessed and shared.. Daddy knew he was not always right and he showed recognition of his human limitations by change, by growth and by example in the way he lived..yet to me as his Daughter…he was PERFECTLY IMPERFECT.. Daddy was a protector, a provider and one of kind..the essence of who he was and how he lived and worked was love therefore it was God.. Daddy’s God and religion was LOVE..love for his wife, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins, family and for those he could inspire or help..Daddy shared so much LOVE…Daddy shared his God..and it is LOVE Daddy is, was and always will be just simply Love.. Daddy, I want you to know that I finally understand it as you mean’t it..LOVE is God and God is LOVE Goodnight Daddy…Love Always Nicola 🫶🏾

I didn’t get the chance to meet Bill, but I knew an awful lot about him through his daughter Nicola. What I did learn is what a wonderful man he was and how much Nicola loved him. I will be thinking of you all on Friday 20th. Rest in peace Bill you are in gods care now . Love always Fran xx
My sincerest condolences for the entire Sandy family. I met Mr. Sandy a couple times and I had so much respect for him. I loved hearing stories from Dr. Sandy about how he was an amazing father, husband, and brother to his family. Through those stories, I learned valuable life lessons. I would always tell Dr. Sandy how I wished I had a father like him. He will be missed. Sending so much love and peace to the family xoxo
