Sally Jo Dunning passed away peacefully on June 6, 2025 at the age of 90 at her home in Alexandria, Virginia.
Born in 1935 in Chehalis, WA, Sally was the daughter of Edgar and Grayce Allmer. She graduated from Chehalis High School in 1954. In her senior year she was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and started her career in banking after graduation.
Sally married Vernon Sedley Dunning in November 26, 1955, and built a new life as an Air Force family living in Hawaii and California. They moved to the east coast in 1966, Sally behind the wheel driving cross-country with their three small children. The family stopped at every goofy road-side attraction, making lifetime memories.
Sally had a passion for sewing and for making ceramic figures, which she enjoyed with great enthusiasm. She loved decorating her home for Christmas, and was known for her delicious Thanksgiving dinners.
Sally is survived by her three children: Vernon S. Dunning, Jr. (Terri Kaufman), David Lee Dunning, and Stephanie Ann Tierno (Bob); one grandson; and one great-granddaughter, as well as friends who were touched by her steadfast will and her kindness.
Sally’s ashes were scattered June 25, 2025 at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Alexandria, VA.
