Celebrating the Life of
January 31, 1949 — October 17, 2025
LONG BEACH, California — With hearts full of love and gratitude, we share that Mr. Robert Francis Carpenter peacefully passed at 1:55 a.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025, at Atlantic Memorial Healthcare Facility, following a courageous and prolonged illness. He was 76 years old.
Robert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, godfather, uncle, friend, neighbor, and colleague—roles he embraced fully and joyfully throughout his life. To know Robert was to be met with a friendly smile, a familiar wave, daily chat, well-timed joke, quote, or smart remark that would linger long after the moment passed.
Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Robert was the youngest son of William and Evelyn (Lemieux) Carpenter. From an early age, he demonstrated responsibility, leadership, and service to others—values that led him to proudly earn the rank of Eagle Scout, an accomplishment he carried with much pride throughout his life. He graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School in 1967 and later attended Compton Community College.
Robert built a life rooted in dedication and steady work. He began his professional career as a clerk with Bank of America, later serving his community as a tax preparer with H&R Block, where his patience and attention to detail were deeply appreciated. He went on to dedicate 30 years of service to the Santa Fe Railroad in Wilmington, California, working as a tower switchman and proudly serving as a union treasurer. His integrity, reliability, and strong sense of fairness earned him the respect of colleagues and lifelong friendships.
Robert was married for 51 years to the love of his life, Marie Elizabeth Jeannine (Gendron) Carpenter, formerly of Manchester, New Hampshire. Together, they built a home grounded in devotion, resilience, humor, and care for others.
A man of routine and pride, Robert could often be found tending to his neighborhood—hauling in trash cans. sweeping the curb, mowing various lawns while ensuring everything was meticulous, as he conversated with anyone who passed by. He was a constant and comforting presence, a neighbor who truly belonged.
Robert is survived by his loving daughter, Charlene Anita Carpenter Fernandez of Lakewood, California; his son, Robert Francis Carpenter Jr., and daughter-in-law Louisa Carpenter of Idaho; and his cherished grandchildren, Steeler and Brooklyn Fernandez of Lakewood, California. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Ada Carpenter; his goddaughters, Joyce Ann Carpenter and Alison Montminy Hollerman; his godsons, Jean Gabriel Saldana and James Benson; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Robert will be remembered for his generous spirit, devotion to family and community, and his unmistakable humor and sarcasm—gifts that brought laughter, comfort, and connection to all who knew him.
In spirit and in life, Robert lived the words he cherished:
“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.”

Enduring a long college graduation with some of my faves. 🤓😍

The masterpiece 🤩

The only East Coast family I knew on my mother’s side growing up. I can’t remember an important milestone that Uncle Bob and Matante Jeannine weren’t there for. 🥰

Hard at work creating a core memory 🎨👩🏽🎓

Bob, Jeannine , Charlene and Rober Jr came up for my wedding July 26,2003… They made it a memorable moment by taking me to church with my boys in Their Lincoln. My younger son was very impressed by the generosity and thoughtfulness to make the day special with that gesture… Jean-Gabriel remarked that we were riding in style in what he thought was a limousine. Both Bob and Jeannine were generous in offering their home when we were able to bring Sofia , wife of Rogelio my husband’s brother who had had a severe accident and was being. reunited with his wife…. We stayed the night after coming up from an exhausting trip home from San Diego… We will not forget their help to our families.
