In Loving Memory of Phillip Wayne Coffman

Phillip Wayne Coffman was born on March 9, 1942, in Los Angeles, California, to Wayne L. Coffman and Frances Pauline (Calvert) Coffman. A gifted mind from an early age, Phillip was accepted into the highest honors courses at Bakersfield High School. Though his mother encouraged him to savor his youth and placed him in college preparatory classes instead, his brilliance was unmistakable—so much so that his brother James fondly described him as “rocket scientist smart.”
Phillip excelled as a cross-country runner and discovered lifelong passions that would define him: the strategic beauty of chess, the joy of reading, and a devotion to learning. His family often likened him to “a beautiful mind,” captivated by ideas and constantly seeking understanding. Over the years, he built a treasured collection of books on religion, nurturing a faith that deepened steadily as his love for Jesus Christ grew. His favorite color was red—a fitting reflection of his spirited personality.

Phillip’s life was a testament to perseverance and strength. Through dedication and fellowship in A&A and NAMI, he rebuilt his life with courage and grace. He was approaching a remarkable milestone and would have proudly celebrated 30 years of sobriety on January 1st.
He was generous of heart, and his compassion was evident in his consistent support of worthy causes. Phillip donated when he could, giving quietly and sincerely, never seeking recognition—only hoping to help where help was needed.
On December 20, 2025, Phillip transcended to Heaven, where he is now at peace in the presence of the Lord he so faithfully sought. He is preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Frances Coffman, and his beloved aunt, Wilrena Calvert-Miller.
He is survived by his brother, James Coffman Sr.; sister-in-law, Martha Coffman; niece, Stormie (Bryon) Beckerle; nephew, James (Tawny) Coffman II; great-nephews, Austyn Beckerle (Laken Moulder) and James Coffman III; and great-nieces, Savanna Beckerle and Gaje Coffman.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Brenda Anderson, Patti, Mario, Jamie, Wendy Morales, Gloria Rodriguez, Josie, and neighbors Brian and Jeffrey. Your care, friendship, and unwavering support were blessings in Phillip’s life, and you are forever appreciated. You each embodied the true meaning of friendship, and he was blessed to have you.
Phillip will be remembered for his gentle intellect, his faith, his generosity, and the quiet strength that carried him through life. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, curiosity, compassion, and love—and the memory of a beautiful mind and a beautiful soul.
