Nelly arrived to the United States at the age of 18. NYC and the Bronx was always home. She was an incredibly dedicated and hard worker. She worked as a house keeper for over 40 years. Nelly was always a detailed, loyal, and responsible worker. In addition, she always found alternative ways to support her family. She sold clothing, food, and when her daughters were younger, would create designs on clothing. She was the definition of a humble hustler filled with integrity. Nelly was such a hard worker that she worked while being unable to walk while having metastatic cancer. Even until this past fall, Nelly was still “working” by taking to school her neighbors sons and selling food to neighbors. She did whatever she had to do to earn an honest living, support herself, and have enough to give gifts because that was her love language. If Nelly gave you a gift, that was her way of telling you she loved you.
Nelly was a supportive and proud mother. She instilled in her daughters dedication and hard work. She did the best that she could with what was available to her. Nelly was a one-of-a-kind Íta (grandmother). Her love for her grandchildren was limitless. She said her grandchildren were her motor and reason for living. She was always a present and supportive Íta.
Nelly had an undeniable grit. Throughout her life she was always savvy. She was incredibly strong and resilient. Nelly fought so hard to live. She absolutely loved life. She surpassed multiple medical timelines and made sure she was alive for her granddaughter’s second birthday. She was determined to do whatever she put her mind to with grace and without complaining. Nelly’s commitment to care for her body and live, was a mirror showing her deep love for her family. She fought to live to create unforgettable memories. Her perseverance, resilience, and willpower is an inspiration and gift to us all.
Nelly was a kind and giving Soul. She regularly sent packages to those in need to Colombia. She was generous and always thought about others. Nelly was also outgoing and loved chatting on the phone. She loved shopping and finding deals. Nelly’s love for her siblings was unconditional. She especially enjoyed their Saturday outings and eating at Colombian restaurants. Nelly was so determined that even while having metastatic cancer, she said she became a United States Citizen to be a Citizen just like her grandchildren. Nelly had a deep faith for God. She knew that not only was she supported by God throughout her battle with cancer, God was always present throughout her life especially during life’s hardships. Nelly’s faith and will to live were unbreakable.
Nelly transitioned peacefully surrounded by her family. Her determination and zest for living will be missed. She is now resting in peace and love. While we will all miss her deeply in the physical world, we know that her Spirit lives on and we now all have one badass warrior angel protecting and guiding us all.
Her daughters thank everyone for their love, support, and condolences. They ask that in lieu of flowers, if you would like to send a love contribution towards her services, you can send them via Zelle, Cash App, Apple Pay, or Venmo to:

One of my fondest memories of Nelly will always be when I came over, as I often did when Marisol & I were in high school, and she made the most delicious arepas. I had never had arepas before and let me just say that all the other arepas I’ve had since never compared. It was an honor to have had her food. It was made with love & pride in her specialty. She gifted me with the memory of having had it for the first time and how special it was that it was made by her hands. Nelly will forever be loved, missed and cherished by all who had the honor to know her. I will miss her welcoming arms the most. Her love for our family was always something I found comfort in. Our family was lucky and blessed to have her in our lives. We will miss her, her sweet gestures & her love dearly. Te queremos muchísimo, Mayleen, Marco, Myalee, Mara y Manuel
