Words can never truly capture the depth of my love and gratitude for my mother, nor the pain of losing her. She was not only my mother but also my teacher, my confidant, and my closest friend. She was more than a parent; she was my guide, my comfort, and my greatest supporter. Her gentle words, selfless sacrifices, and unwavering faith shaped the person I am today. My mother was the first to show me what unconditional love truly means. Her life was a constant sacrifice, and her joy came from seeing those around her happy and thriving. She carried herself with dignity, yet her humility shone through in every act of service. To everyone who crossed her path, she was a source of comfort, wisdom, and warmth. She taught me resilience in times of difficulty, humility in times of success, and compassion in every circumstance. She had a unique gift of making people feel seen and valued. Whether through her gentle words, her encouraging smile, or her tireless care, my mother left an imprint on hearts that can never be erased. She was strong in times of trial, calm in moments of uncertainty, and full of faith even when life was difficult. From her, I learned that love is shown not only in grand gestures but also in the quiet, everyday sacrifices that often go unnoticed. Her presence filled our home with peace and her laughter was like music that lifted our spirits. She was the anchor of our family, the one who taught us resilience, patience, and the importance of standing together. Even in her silence, she spoke volumes — her life itself was a lesson in kindness, perseverance, and grace. Though words cannot fully capture what she meant to me, I know that my mother’s legacy lives on. It lives in the values she instilled in me, in the faith she nurtured, and in the countless lives she touched. While her absence leaves a deep void, her memory gives me strength, and her love will continue to guide me through the journey of life. I will miss you soo much Rest well, dearest Mum. You were my greatest blessing, and I will carry your love in my heart forever. Favour Adayilo (Daughter)

Mom loved without condition. It didn’t matter if someone hurt her, she always looked the other way and loved the person in spite of what they had done. And she loved with her whole heart. Her love was never forced, it was just always there – no matter what. She loved us like no one else could – and it was a strong, genuine love. As her life came to a close, I realized that no matter how much she told me she loved me, she couldn't put it into words - her love was so great. Victor

Aunty Grace, words fail me as I try to accept the shocking news of your sudden passing. It has been difficult to write this tribute, the moments we shared can write more than a book, there’s so much to say from the bottom of my heart but I have to leave space for others. You saw me as a close confidant in every aspect of your life, you discussed everything with me. The memories of you telling me everyday, “Betty, you’re an angel sent from God”, “Betty, you’re my angel, you’re an eagle, you are different” keeps ringing in my head. I still cannot believe that you are gone. It feels like a dream I am yet to wake up from. The memories of our calls during the late hours of the night, be it midnight or 3am to discuss pressing private matters. Just a week before you came to the office waiting for two hours, you still put a call through, I didn’t realise the curtains were drawing to a close. You were always thoughtful, always caring. You valued every moment, and you loved selflessly. I am extremely blessed with the moments I had with you. I will miss you forever. Your beloved children you left behind, I will always see your face in them. You were a true child of God You are missed, I really miss you. Thank you, I bless God for making our paths cross. Thank you for the memories, for the prayers, for the love, and for the life you lived so beautifully. Your legacy of faith, kindness, and generosity will live on in our hearts forever. Rest well in the bosom of the Lord, Aunty. We will miss you deeply. - Dr. Mrs Betty Olutunde

Mama Africa is simply a woman with the heart of a mother. When I heard about her demis I was broken to say the least. I only met her once the very first day she visited my station, Kubwa Abattoir. Irrespective of her class and position, Mama Africa gave all the staff listening audience, gave us words of advice, gave us ideas and solutions regarding work and life in general. She is a very considerate person, humane and kind-hearted. Death always go for the best and indeed her demise is a living proof that death actually goes for the best because Mama Africa is indeed the best in her capacity. Everybody keeps speaking and saying lots of good things about her because she is full of good thoughts and actions. She impacted humanity in her little way and I pray she receives her deserved reward in heaven. Eze Sunday

Destiny brought me close to Mama Africa in Sept. 2021 when she was posted to Gender Dept as Director. She was so kind, passionate and emphathetic. We worked together so closely until the relationship grew beyond official to personal. Not looking at me as a small boy, she relate with me in a special way, tell me everything and wish me grow in the service. The two encounters my wife had to meet Mama Africa increased my value at home. The way Mama Africa embraced my wife with hug and kiss showed the value she had for me and since then, the way my wife reacted when I come back from work late changed. Since then, whenever I come back home earlier than expected, my wife will ask about Mama Africa and why I left early. Exactly two weeks to her death, I and Dearest was in her house. We were served plenty Irish potatoes and we ate the little we could eat. Mama Africa came to join us and started eating the remaining from the same plate and the same spoon we used.

This is the hardest and the most painful thing that I have ever written. There is a musical chair of memories playing on the screen of my mind as I type this. From my earliest memories of Mama Africa as a young boy growing up in Dutsepe to the proud moments of experiencing her bulldoze her way as a technocrat and the high hopes that I had for the people of the FCT after she resumed office as the Head of Service, I witnessed so much that I forgot she was human. She was full of life and such an incurable optimist that no one around her could imagine life without her. I was with her on that fateful Sunday evening. She was interceding on my behalf, like she’s always done. Later, in the wee hours of Monday, I was called upon to take her to the hospital. Unfortunately, that trip ended at the mortuary where we deposited her body. Her life was a sermon and she continues to preach to us even in death. Mrs. Grace Adayilo was a detribalized patriot and a mother to everyone which earned her the moniker “Mama Africa”. Death might have ended her journey here on earth, but the relationships she built and left behind shall outlive us all. Mama Africa lived a life worthy of emulation and she shall be remembered for that for generations to come. We deeply miss her and pray to God to raise people who will continue on the path that she was on. Adieu, my big sister Mama Africa.

TRIBUTE TO MAMA AFRICA Dr. Grace Adayilo aka Mama Africa, epitomized a true manliness of strength, a force, while she lived; exemplified—through quiet and dogged determination, unwavering, assertive, yet supportive, steady and hands-on. In silence, she spoke volumes, and loud when declaring her position for the GOD she served while here. Constant in love and dependable, like the sun rising each morning. Her departure is a sudden Sunset at Dawn experience on the 1st day of September 2025 Whether fixing things around the house or sharing a knowing glance at the dinner table, she represented well, she made us feel safe around her, seen, and loved. She was the one we turned to when things went wrong—and the first we wanted to share good news with. Though she may no longer be at the table with us, her work presence remains in every story told, every lesson remembered, every act of kindness passed on. This is a small reflection of the life she lived and the love she gave. A true mother, through and through, she may be gone, but she will always be in our memory, in spirit and in heart.
We mourn the passing of Mrs. Grace Adayilo, the first indigenous and female Head of Service of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, a trailblazer whose life exemplified service to God, to country, and to humanity. Fondly known as Mama Africa, she was more than a public servant; she was a servant of the people. Through her women’s group, Yeyedu, she championed the empowerment of women in underserved communities. Together with interventions from Helpline Social Support Initiative Abuja, she supported skills training, access to healthcare, and initiatives that restored hope and dignity to many families. Her passion for uplifting women, her commitment to social justice, and her abiding faith in God made her a beacon of inspiration. She gave her strength to others, her wisdom to her colleagues, and her love to her community. As we remember her, we celebrate a life of impact, compassion, and service. Tribute To An Iroko, A Woman of Substance And An Accomplished Civil Servant The news of your demise came with a great shock to those of us who were privileged to relate with you while you lived. It was most devastating remembering what you stood for, a woman of peace, a preacher of the gospel, someone who believed in a more United a Nigeria by shunning tribalism and religious bigotry while discharging her official duties. You were indeed MAMA AFRICA by the attributes you exhibited while at the helm of affairs of Federa Capital Territory Civil Service. You demonstrated a rare quality, gave hope and worthy sense of belonging to many who were marginalised. I have no doubt that you are now resting in the bosom of our creator. I pray the good Lord grant your aged mother and other members of your immediate family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. Rest in peace MAMA AFRICA. From the family of Opara Eze.L.
