October 11, 1947 — December 21, 2023
Melvin H. Simpson Jr, 76, of East Hartford, CT, passed away peacefully at home with his beloved wife by his side on December 21, 2023.
Melvin was born on October 11,1947 in Norfolk, Va. to the late Melvin and Doretha Simpson. He later moved to Connecticut as a young child. During his early years, Mel was the quarterback of the Weaver High School football team, where he led them to the state championship during his time there. He later graduated from Weaver High School in 1964. His remarkable athletic abilities earned him a reputation as potentially the greatest athlete ever witnessed by many. Mel was even approached by minor league baseball scouts, but he made the honorable decision to enlist in the United States Air Force. He served his country proudly and later received an honorable discharge.
Melvin attended the University of Hartford and was honored in the Basketball Hall of Fame on campus. He also attended Trinity College where he earned his degree. He was employed at The Capital Region Council of Governments as the council programs administration coordinator for over 20 years. In his later years, Mel was also employed by VANTIS Life Insurance company for nearly 20 years before retiring. After retirement, Melvin spent his days traveling, spending time with his grandchildren and enjoying life with his wife.
Melvin leaves behind his wife of over 30 years, Arlene Williams-Simpson of East Hartford, CT. His children, Melvin Simpson III of Goldsboro, NC, Christopher Simpson of Rocky Hill, CT, Athena & Son in-law Derrick Comeaux of East Hartford, CT, Aurelia Ausikaitis of East Hampton, Ma, Melina Ausikaitis of Chicago, IL, Noah Ausikaitis of Greenfield, Ma, Nathan Ausikaitis of Greenfield, Ma, Simaya Ausikaitis and son in-law Jason Reis of Evanston, IL, and Amanda Ausikaitis of Watertown, CT. He also leaves behind two sisters, Bernice Love-Hicks of Windsor, CT and Connie Love of Hartford, CT. He is missed by his three lifelong best friends, Rick Risley, Lew Nedell and Mark Dressler. As well as 17 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and family friends he loved dearly.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, Clarence Love and Gary Love, his sister Gladys Simpson, his grandson Dedriech Simpson, his mother in-law June Williams and brother in-law Paul Williams.
Mel was cherished by many, especially his grandchildren who he devoted so much of his time to. He leaves behind a legacy of intelligence, passion for music and a love for sports. Mel was adored by all who knew him, and his memory will endure eternally.
