Mavis Ntombazana (MaNdlela) Bennie
Mavis Ntombazana Bennie, uMaNdlela, was born on 12 January 1941 in Verulam, where she spent her early years. She completed her primary education in her hometown before moving to Inanda (eMachobeni). There, she attended the esteemed Inanda Seminary, where she pursued her secondary education.
Mavis began her professional journey at Natal Blood Transfusion before enrolling at Adam’s Teaching College to earn her teacher’s diploma. She went on to dedicate her career to education, teaching in various schools, including Sonyongwane, and shaping the lives of countless students with her passion and commitment.
She married the late Edgar Horace Bennie, and together they were blessed with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who remain her proud legacy. She is also survived by her brother, Gilbert Ndlela.
After her retirement, Mavis continued her lifelong devotion to others by running the Star Crossed Orphanage for four years. She lived a full and vibrant life, always surrounded by her love of animals, nature, music, dancing, traveling, and sewing. Known for her love of bright colours and her impeccable, on-point style, she carried herself with grace and discipline, touching everyone around her with her spirit.
Mavis departed on 24 September 2025 after a short illness. She will be remembered as a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Her memory will forever be cherished, and her legacy will continue through the many lives she inspired.
