Celebrating the Life of
June 9, 1924 — May 18, 2023
Marshall Clinton Culpepper was called home to be with our Lord on May 18, 2023, at the age of 98. Cinton was born June 9, 1924 in Smith County to Leon and Winnie Culpepper of Winona, Texas. At 7 years old, he and his sister, Bonnie, went to live with their grandparents.
Clinton graduated from Winona School, where he played 6-man football. He joined the Navy in 1943 and served on the U.S.S. Crescent City during World War II. Clinton participated in battles in the Pacific War to include Guam, Peleliu, Leyte, and Okinawa where he drove landing craft to transport men and supplies to the islands and also brought wounded back to the ship. He was highlighted by KLTV news on the Freedom Fighter segment on March 5, 2016.
After serving his country, he was honorably discharged March 30, 1946. Five months later, he met and married the love of his life, Virginia Louise Allen. They married in secret on Aug 31, 1946. Then they both went home to their families. When Clinton confessed to his grandmother that he had gotten married, her simple advice was "wash your feet before you go to bed."
Clinton started his career pumping gas for Allied Oil Company and over a period of 45 years, he worked his way up to office manager.
Clinton was a kind and gentle soul and was a faithful follower of the Lord. Clinton and his family attended Old Omen Road Church of Christ for many years, serving as an elder. Around 1986, they began attending West Erwin Church of Christ. Clinton and Louise were very active in the church, serving in the benevolence center, going on youth mission trips, helping prepare Wednesday night meals, and participating in many other events.
Clinton went to live at Watkins-Logan Veterans home in 2018. He became known for his sharp mind and skill at poker, where residents earned play money that could “purchase” gifts for family and friends during Christmas. Often times, after winning a few hands, he would intentionally throw the rest to allow less fortunate players to earn money for their loved ones’ gifts. He was loved by many and truly enjoyed his life. After he passed, Watkins-Logan honored him with their traditional Final Salute by the staff and fellow veterans.
He will be greatly missed.
Clinton was preceded in death by his loving wife, Louise, of 72 years. And more recently, his sweet sister, Bonnie Montgomery.
Clinton is survived by his children, Mike Culpepper & wife Gatha, Donna Brown & husband Tommy and Ken Culpepper & wife Cathy, all of Tyler. He was blessed with 7 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 26, 2023 at West Erwin Church of Christ. Visitation is at 10, service is at 11.
