September 18, 1957 — September 16, 2023
On September 16, 2023 Mark Spivey of Fairfax, Virginia passed away at the age of 65. He was born September 18, 1957 in Columbus, Indiana and was the second born of three children. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 37 years, Claire Spivey, his children Elaine, Shannon, Lauren, and Ryan. And his grandchildren, Olivia and Elsie – and his cat Sophie.
Mark and his family moved to Fairfax, Virginia in 1959. He graduated from Fairfax Highschool and went on to Northern Virginia Community College where he received an Associates Degree in Parks and Recreation. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology from Indiana University. He later went on to receive a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.
He started his career at the Defense Mapping Agency which later became the National Geospatial Intelligence agency. He devoted 38 years of service to the Federal Government. In 1985, he was assigned to be stationed on St. Helena Island to track satellites. There, he met his wife Claire and they were married on the island. Claire moved to America shortly after.
Mark had a passion for the outdoors; he spent many weekends at his house on the Chesapeake Bay in Reedville, Virginia with his wife Claire – fishing, kayaking, and spending time outside on the water and in his yard and garden. He was full of knowledge, loved learning new things and always loved a challenge. He was a devoted, loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 21 at 11:00am at Fairfax United Methodist in Fairfax, Virginia. 10300 Stratford Ave, Fairfax VA 22030.
