Celebrating the Life of
June 4, 1925 — August 1, 2023
Madelle Vines, daughter of Sam and Ida Rosenberg, was born in Portland, Oregon on June 4th, 1925. Madelle, her parents and brother Wallace moved to the San Francisco bay area when she was four years old. She returned to Portland after marrying Morton Vines in 1947. Predeceased by her husband Morton and daughter Loren, Madelle is survived by her six children and one grandson: Gail, Jerald and Ida of Portland, Valerie and Harold of Manzanita, Mitchell of Brooklyn, and grandson Dustin Dybvig of Portland. An avid reader and Scrabble player, she loved to knit and crochet, and enjoyed baking and bowling. Madelle was passionate about music and her children inherited that love. She had a green thumb and also started an investment club, Northeast Investors, which she ran for thirty years. Madelle was a bright, caring, intelligent, fun loving person and a humanist. A long time resident of Northeast Portland, Madelle enjoyed living in Seaside, Oregon for over four years, before returning to Portland last year. She was laid to rest at The Jewish Cemetery at River View in Portland on August 3rd, 2023, with immediate family in attendance. A celebration of Madelle's life will be held in the future.

Madelle and Mitchell

As Mitchell says, his mom was an amazing lady!! I had the pleasure of meeting her on a couple of occasions when she visited Mitchell in Manhattan, years ago. It was then that I learned of her love for puppies. Her knitting talents found their way to me when she was kind enough to knit and send me a lovely red wool hat that I still enjoy wearing during winter months. I know Mitchell had a very special and beautiful bond with his mom -- and, as he expressed, "will miss her terribly." In loving care and sympathy, Jeanette
Madelle: Not merely my first cousin, but also my very dear close friend. I treasure every conversation, every moment. That which you gave to Madelle was returned to you many times over. I speak for anyone who knew her well, and who valued her love, friendship, sense of humor, intellect, and so much more.
I enjoyed being Madelle's exercise teacher for a few years as she was in her late 80s and early 90s. She was such a positive and joyful presence! I was always so impressed with her sharp mind and ability to make complicated knitting projects (of which I was a lucky recipient!). Madelle was liked by all our class members and she has been missed since the move to Seaside. We will remember her fondly.
Other than Mitchell and me, no one could have been happier about our marriage than Madelle. She welcomed me into the family with open arms. She was a wonderful mother-in-law and I miss her.
