Celebrating the Life of
January 31, 1940 — March 21, 2024
Born in Kiel, Germany in 1940, to Tamara & Alfred Zambon. Karl had one sister, Gitta. Being born during a time of war in a seaport town, his formative years were surrounded with hardship and the family showed strength as well as levity amongst adversity. As a young man Karl was known to love an eclectic array of music. He played piano by ear, figuring out how to play his favorite tunes, and music has always been a source of joy for Karl.
He left home at a young age to work in different places, traveling to many countries. Being the spiritual seeker, Karl saved all his money to buy a motorcycle, complete with a sidecar. That motorcycle took him on the journey of a lifetime from Germany, through the Middle East, India, island hopping through Indonesia, all the way to Australia. He was in search of answers that took years of testing which religion or spiritual practice could fulfill God’s plan for him and the world as a whole. Ultimately, he found what he was looking for once he arrived home in Germany. After a lot of prayer and fasting to confirm if this was the way, Karl joined the Unification Church in 1978.
In 1979, Karl was matched by Rev. Moon to Katharina Thiessen and was Blessed in marriage on July 1st, 1982. They moved to Alabama and lived there for 14 years, creating a beautiful family with four children; Michelle, Michael, Abigail, and Glorianna.
Karl’s life has always been tied to his love for the ocean. From the seaside of his hometown in Kiel, Germany, to where he raised his family on the gulf coast in Bayou la Batre, Alabama and later Bridgeport, CT, Karl has always found peace by the water. Karl insisted on being included in the church seafood business in Alabama, starting on a shrimping boat and later as a salesman for rock shrimp to retailers across the US, cementing his love for seafood.
In 1997 he moved with his family to Paraguay to join Katharina in establishing a latin branch of the newspaper, The Washington Times. With only a basic grasp of Spanish from his time in Spain, he ventured into the unknown, knowing that God had called them to this land for a purpose. During this time, he discovered his passion for building a point of connection to the Mennonite community, of which his wife, Katharina, is originally from. He felt compelled to create a yearly celebration commemorating the arrival of the Mennonites in Paraguay. Their port of entry is located on the land that had been purchased by the church. These efforts helped to build a bridge between the Mennonite community and the Unification church.
As the time came to leave Paraguay, each child made their way back to the US, one by one, and Karl was the first parent to return to be there as Katharina finished her role in Paraguay. This period showcased Karl's resilience as he started anew in New Jersey, working small jobs to make ends meet.
In 2004, Katharina finally joined Karl in Bridgeport, CT where they established their roots until today. Karl served as a dorm parent for BIA and building manager for the Seaside building, where he worked tirelessly and with unwavering loyalty until his retirement at the age of 77.
During this time, his children all got married and had children of their own. Karl was a loving and playful grandfather, currently having 6 grandchildren with one more on the way!
Karl was a man with spiritual fortitude, living his life by spiritual inspiration and a desire to serve a higher purpose. He was incredibly bold and steadfast, and he lived his life by heaven’s principles until the very end.

As we prepare for the ascension ceremony(Seung Wha) my thoughts go to Karl’s creed: Matthew 6. Ending with “But seek ye first the Kingdom of God.” Karl will now be all about building God’s Kingdom more than ever. Let’s support him and his family to be free to pursue God’s Kingdom. Aju.
Mr. Zambon built natural wood playgrounds for hundreds of children and he hammered, sawed, and fixed up our school building. He loves Bridgeport, Bayou La Batre, Paraguay, the ocean, and thus, the whole world! Thank you so much for everything. "You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars... And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God... and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul." -Max Erhmann
Karl is my spiritual grandfather. I met him in a pub in Norwich England in 1978 (or 79) where I was playing Irish music. He accompanied us to my first weekend workshop and I remember he showed me a photograph of his motorbike and sidecar because at that time I rode a motorbike. Then I didn't see him again until he showed up in Bridgeport 25 years later. Our friendship has continued since then. It's a small world.

Dads 84th birthday celebration earlier this year in January, 2024.

In Alaska visiting Abi after the birth of her first son Finn. Karl's sister Gitta and husband Mobbel tagged along for the trip.

Karl & Katharina with Hugh & Nora Spurgin. The Spurgins were the catalyst for our families move to Bridgeport and they worked closely together for many years.

Mother's Day 2013 in Bridgeport with family visiting from Paraguay.

The Zambons, Pimentel's and Thiessen's reunited in the summer. A tight knit group and VERY large family dinners.

We are so grateful that Dad was able to watch all of his children get married. He even walked Glori down the aisle just last August and had everyone in tears.

In 2010 Karl had the chance to visit Jerusalem and walk in the steps of Jesus. It was a profound experience for him.

The love for Alaska started to spread into Dad extended family. His sister Gitta and husband Mobbel visited along with our cousins family and they quickly fell in love with Alaska.

Karl loved the ocean and loved fishing. This was from a fishing trip Michael and Dad took to Kodiak Alaska in 2012.

The Zambon families first visit to Germany to Dads home town. We all met his family for the first time.

Karl was a man of spiritual conviction. He received a feeling that he must travel to Australia (southern most point) and Alaska (to the northern most point). Why? well, he never really told us but along the way he met the Reids who will eventually become a part of our family as Lin Reid eventually became his son in law. This photo is dad with a whale that washed up on shore in Barrow, Alaska.

Karl and David Burton. David is Dads spiritual grandson and plays the flute. He came to play his famous Irish jigs for one of Dads birthdays and Dad cherished those memories and would rewatch the videos in his later years. David visited once again in Dads last week to play for him one more time and we could all tell he was soaking it up.

Every birthday Dad would request to go to Joes American Bar & Grill in Fairfield and would demand the table by the fireplace. We spent many special occasions in this restaurant.

Karl & Katharina's first grand daughter, Saya commits to Binghamton University. First grandchild off to college.

Dad chilling by the pools in Costa Rica, just soaking up the sun and watching the grandkids play.

Karl with Michael and son in law, Tokuo in Alaska for Abi & Lins wedding. Karl had a special love for Alaska in his later years.

Family Christmas circa 2014

Dad's last trip. We all went to the beautiful Costa Rica for Glorianna & Nicks wedding. Dad loved everything, the food, the flora, the ocean, and especially the people. So many people came from his life and was able to spend time with him.

The Zambons with Katharina's parents in her hometown, Para Todo, Paraguay.

In 1996 they moved their whole family to Paraguay, Katharina's home country to pursue her new mission to lead the Tiempos Del Mundo newspaper. This was taken on the first day of their arrival.

Karl was a very creative person and he expressed that through the building of various unique playgrounds at our church nursery and at their home.

In Alabama, they raised their family of four children; Michelle, Michael, Abigail and Gloriana.

Karl loved the ocean and felt called to work in the church seafood industry in Bayou la Barre, AL. This is him on one of the many fishing and shrimping boats he worked on.

In 1982, Karl & Katharina were blessed in marriage.

In his 30's Karl traveled through India on a motorcycle and captured photography along the way. He traveled for a total of 8 years.
