Celebrating the Life of
September 2, 1980 — August 13, 2024
John Robert Michael Gates Molesworth, known to friends and family as J.R., 43, of Portland, OR died August 13, 2024.
J.R. was born September 2nd 1980 to John Molesworth and Linda Gates in Portland, OR. J.R. was a member of the Rho Theta Honor Society at Mt. Hood Community College and was a passionate and wildly creative filmmaker and writer.
J.R. had a fervent love of storytelling, from movies and literature to comic books and music. Films were his favorite and he didn’t just passively watch them, he would study them. He poured his heart and soul into his vast body of unpublished works, writing over a dozen completed feature film screenplays, a collection of short stories, several graphic novels, a book of poetry and many more short films; some of which he produced, directed, edited, and starred in while attending MHCC, Portland State University, and the NW Film Center.
J.R. had a radical notion that art should be a form of personal revolution and that it could inspire societal change. He believed in the power of words and images to move the human spirit. J.R. wanted nothing more than to contribute to the arts in a way that would resonate with others in a profound and meaningful way.
J.R. was a parishioner of Athey Creek Church in West Linn, OR and a devout Christian. His niece and nephews were among his greatest joys in life and he exuded love and light when he held them in his arms.
A dynamic and complex man, J.R. was bursting with raw energy. He could be equal parts compassionate, generous, and charming as well as chaotic, turbulent, and intense. This characteristic gave him a unique sense of humor that was absurd, shocking and dark at times, yet almost always hysterically funny.
J.R. was predeceased by his father John Molesworth. He is survived by his mother Linda Gates, his sister Jenny Molesworth, and his brother Christopher Molesworth.
