September 23, 1929 — July 11, 2023
John R. Lajara, 93, of Punta Gorda, Florida, passed away on July 11, 2023. John was born in Manhattan, NY on September 23rd, 1929, to Ida Brito and Angelo Lajara. After graduating from the Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades, he spent five years in the US Navy as a Machinist’s Mate, 2nd class. Afterward, he began his career as an Equipment Designer and started a family. His career led him from New York to California, where his family expanded. Later in life, he moved to Florida with his wife and second daughter to live out his retirement years.
John was an active member in his church and the USS Missouri Association. He was also perpetually active in maintaining his home, vehicles and landscaping. He loved his family, well-seasoned meals and the Tampa Bay Rays…sometimes.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister (Mildred), half-brother (Julius) and son (John). He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Torres Lajara, his children, Robert and Lisa, their mother, Gloria and his daughter, Angela, along with their spouses. He is also survived by his niece, Netania, his nephew, Adam, six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will take place at San Antonio Catholic Church on Saturday, August 26th at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be contributed to either San Antonio Catholic Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Charity.
