Celebrating the Life of
October 23, 1971 — August 28, 2022
John, Johnny, Hiya, G, Unk G Funk, we will miss you.
John Dennis Gillespie of Shakopee, MN, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, August 28 at the age of 50. His family is both devastated and shocked by his death. Private services will be held for family, please share your memories and condolences [here] (https://bluebutterfly.com/memorial/v2/john-gillespie).
John was born on October 23, 1971 in Minneapolis, MN to Dennis Gordon Gillespie of Richfield, MN and Iva Lou (Larson) Gillespie of Clinton, MN.
He was baptized on December 5, 1971 and confirmed on May 4, 1986 at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in South Minneapolis, MN.
John graduated from Richfield Senior High School in Richfield, MN on June 7, 1990 and attended Mankato State University. In 2000, He founded The Great Outdoors Lawn and Landscape. For over 20 years, alongside his team, John worked hard to shape lives and gardens in beautiful ways.
From a young age, “Johnny” was a high energy, fun-loving tree hugger who surrounded himself with nature, family and many friends. With his dogs by his side, no matter the weather or season, he enjoyed doing anything that could keep him outdoors. John had a great fondness for hunting, fishing and especially for spending time in his gardens. Very rarely was he seen without dirt under his fingernails or holes in his pants, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Known for his selflessness and generosity, Johnny touched the lives of countless people and was loved by many. Never without a smile to share, he thoroughly enjoyed life and the people around him. John always brightened the days and lives of others.
In addition to his parents, John is survived by his sister Amy (David) Rosario. He leaves behind his beloved dogs, Sasha and Kayleigh, his nieces Rebecca and Jennifer, nephews Michael and Spencer as well as extended family members who will miss him dearly.
John was an organ donor and in his passing was able to help over 75 people.
Blessed be his memory.
Please share a photo or video, or post a heartfelt condolence to the family.

John was the best! He planted a perennial garden at the baptismal party for my oldest…many memories were made there and it still beautifies my yard this time of year!

As kids, something we looked forward to most throughout the year was going to the Minnesota State Fair with Uncle Johnny at the end of the summer. We had the best laughs, and always went home with giant stuffed animals from the carnival games, our tummies full of delicious food and our hearts full of memories.
John was such an amazing human. It makes me incredibly sad to hear of his passing and I am very sorry for his loss. I worked with John at Great Outdoors for about 5 years. He was very kind and always willing to teach. He would always assume the best in people; something not seen very often these days. My favorite times working with John were when we were doing the dirtiest of jobs (he seemed to thrive in these situations) and after a hard day back at the shop enjoy the peace and quiet.
To the family, I’m so sorry for the loss he was a special man. John was one of those people that when you saw him and spoke to with him it was like coming home. The warmth of his company was infectious and no matter how long it had been you still felt the bond of friendship. John had so many great traits and they’re to long to list here but if you knew him you know what they were. I had not seen him for a few years but it hurts to know that I’ll not get to experience those feelings again. I love you bro and send my love and support to all who are feeling his loss.
So shocked at the news. Too young. Prayers to all the family and friends to get through this difficult time. He will be missed by many.
Just a great dude…a guy I certainly looked up to and always looked forward to seeing around. Loved when he showed up to a softball game miles from home…on his bike with his ball stuff in his backpack. Rest In Peace.
