
Celebrating the Life of
March 16, 1926 — June 26, 2023
James Miller passed away on June 26 in Texas at the age of 97, survived by his children, Lynn Ellen and Richard.
Jim was born on March 16, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan to Sophie and Joseph Miller.
He earned his B.S. in Marine Sciences at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, his Masters in bacteriology at UCLA, and a Ph.D in infectious diseases at UCLA.
Jim married Shirley on June 29, 1951
and they had two children, Rick and Lynn-Ellen.
He attained the position of Assistant Professor at UCLA in 1958, rising to Full Professor of Microbiology and Immunology in 1972.
During his illustrious career he became one of the world’s experts on treponema pallidum, the bacterium that causes syphilis.
Jim was a wonderful mentor and teacher, winning numerous “Golden Apple “ awards given by UCLA medical students, as well as the “Lifetime of Excellence and
Innovation in Teaching” award presented by the David Geffen School of Medicine.
We celebrate his life here, but at the same time mourn the loss of this wonderful father, son, brother, uncle,
cousin, friend, colleague and mentor who is truly irreplaceable, and will be forever missed.
