Celebrating the Life of
February 14, 1965 — March 21, 2024
James Matthew Hemphill, 59, entered his heavenly journey on March 21, 2024 in Underwood, ND. He was surrounded by support and unconditional love.
Jim was born on February 14, 1965 to Marvin and Barbara Hemphill in Aurora, Illinois.
As a boy he spent most of his time wreaking havoc in the towns of Beardstown and Lincoln, Illinois. He also loved spending the summers swimming and playing football with his twin brother, John. At age 8 he accepted Jesus as his Lord and personal savior and was baptized at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Litchfield, Illinois. He later joined the US Army and served 342 days as the best potato peeler they ever had. After leaving the Army he resided in Lincoln, Illinois where he reconnected with Angie. They later married on May 8, 1987 and had three beautiful children. He spent the rest of his life “loving her the most.” In 1988 they decided to relocate to North Carolina to raise their family. He lived in North Carolina until he fell ill and decided to spend his final days in North Dakota where he just wanted to go fishing in the Missouri River. During his life he enjoyed grilling food for his family with no tongs or spatula, fishing while eating Doritos, and collecting coins, baseball cards, and antique items such as weapons. He was always the life of any party and the star of every show. He gained many friends through his natural charisma and amazing sense of humor. Everyone he knew has a great “Jimbo” story to tell.
He is survived by his wife and best friend, Angela Hemphill. He also leaves behind his children: Brittany Hemphill, Alex (Brandi) Hemphill, and Chelsey Hemphill Clay. His legacy will live on through his 8 grandchildren: Brooklyn Lewis, Alissa Hunter, Kylie Hemphill, Alex Hemphill, Shiloh Hemphill, Samuel Hemphill, Madisyn Clay, and Matthew Thomas. He is also survived by his step mother, Ruth Hemphill, and siblings: twin brother John (Lori) Hemphill, Tyna (Floyd) Newlan, Marva (Fred) Uchtman, Rebecca (Brian) Walton, Ted Hemphill, Dynean (Jim) Crowe, and Wynona (Chuck) McCall.
On that day, he was finally reunited with his parents, Marvin Hemphill and Barbara Glass; brother, Christopher Hemphill; sister, Sam Bryant; neices Lisa Hemphill and Maria Uchtman; and nephew Dustin Hemphill.
There will be a virtual celebration on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 1 pm EST.
The family appreciates all of the love, thoughts, and prayers that have been sent and thanks everyone for loving Jim during his lifetime.
