Celebrating the Life of
August 27, 2022 — August 25, 2023
For almost an entire year, our lives were filled with more joy, love, and laughter than we ever could have imagined. Isla was born on August 27, 2022 and gave us many of the happiest days we could imagine until she passed away on August 25, 2023, following unexpected complications arising from surgery to repair a congenital heart defect.
While many of you did not have the opportunity to meet her or spend much time with her, we hope that through this page you are able to experience some of the joy she brought to us and see what a bright light she was. She truly was the happiest, easiest baby we could have asked for, despite some of her additional medical needs that no parent expects. We wish she could have spent more time with everyone but had to be cautious to keep her healthy while waiting for heart surgery. Our only solace is that we were able to have that much more 1:1 time with her.
Isla was born at the Mother Baby Center of Abbott Northwestern in Minneapolis. She spent almost her entire first month of life in the Special Care Unit at Children's Minneapolis, initially admitted for a planned observation related to her known heart defect but staying longer due to swallowing problems. We spent every day with her until she was able to come home. Special thanks especially to nurses Margaret and Shiloh for taking care of all three of us during Isla's stay- they truly were extended family by the end of it.
After being in the hospital longer than planned, every part of daily life after bringing Isla home seemed more precious. We loved doing simple things like spending time outdoors, going for walks, running errands, and really anything we could have Isla join us for. Everything just seemed that much better with her with us. Our dogs, Walter and Hazel, welcomed her aboard with plenty of sniffs and kisses. Hazel quickly took on the best friend role, wanting to join Isla in anything that was happening- snuggles, tummy time, giving kisses, etc. Christa was able to enjoy a six-month maternity leave that she wouldn't have traded for the world. You would be hard-pressed to find a happier little family.
As Isla grew, her personality began to shine through. Always full of smiles and giggles, curious, determined, wanting to be as independent as possible but always within reach of a hug or kiss. You could see the pride and excitement in her face whenever she accomplished something she was learning to do, whether it was sitting up on her own, crawling, standing, taking steps, or getting a new word out. She was never afraid to clap for herself when accomplishing these things either. She had a goofy side as well and loved to be silly. During those times, she quickly changed from our Peanut to "Pea-nutty." Recent favorite hijinks were standing up and then "trust falling" back into Christa or Paul's lap with no warning- but laughing the whole way down, making a growling face until she couldn't hold back her giggles, and playing peek-a-boo with anyone in sight. She loved waving at people and saying "Hi!" whenever we were out and about, making friends wherever she went.
Another highlight of her year was her time spent at Children's Discovery Academy. They welcomed us without reservation, made us feel at ease quickly, and their love and care for Isla was obvious. The love was clearly mutual, as Isla always was excited to see her teachers in the morning with no difficulty at hand-off. The pictures they sent us every day showed how much she was enjoying herself. Maybe they are so good at their jobs that all families feel this way, but they made it easy for us to believe Isla was the favorite.
Some of Isla's favorite things were her lovies Sid the Sloth and Aggie the Dragon, her dogs, her teddy bears, playing peek-a-boo, blowing kisses, dancing, hugs and kisses, booping people and putting heads together, practicing walking, music- especially Snoop Dogg and Blink 182, practicing her sippy cup with a dramatic "Aaaaahhhh" following each sip, picking out her own favorite outfits, exploring outside, and anything purple, but especially purple foods and purple toys. She loved snuggles with her mom and dad and time with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and her cousin. First words included hi, Mama, Dada, doggy, Aggie, this, and up. She was quick to learn and loved books, especially "Little Blue Truck."
We would like to extend a special thank you to Isla's pediatrician, Dr. Cornea, for all of her advocacy and truly loving care in the time we have known her. Thank you also to the staff at Children's Hospital for the care they provided to Isla over the last year, and especially in her final days with us. They treated her, and us, with dignity and compassion.
To our family and friends, we would not be making it through this incredibly difficult time without you. Your support and love is so appreciated. If you have any memories or photos of Isla, we would be honored if you would share them in the Memories section. Please scroll through and enjoy the photos we have posted in the Memories section to share in some of our favorite times with her.
In lieu of a memorial service, we request that you take the time to do something special with your loved ones, spend time in nature, or find something purple that brings you joy.
Please share a photo or video, or post a heartfelt condolence to the family.
I’ll forever hold in my heart my memory of meeting Isla in January. It was a perfect breakfast meetup with Christa, Paul and my family, with the best and cutest entertainment, Baby Isla. Thank you for sharing so many other wonderful pictures and memories! Along with myself and many others, Isla touched so many lives. She will be remembered always. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with you. Sending you hugs and love from afar.
Paul and Christa, You two are such amazing and great people. Isla had a great little life being with you two, she was a lucky little girl. I love you both so much. My thoughts are always with you.

Christa and I were lucky enough to have our Maternity leaves overlap. We were able to get the girls together for play dates, and a walk in the park! We love our Isla!

Isla and Nellie! Same couch, just a little bigger.

I was so happy to spend a week watching Isla while Christa and Paul were at work. She took all her naps in my arms that week. Yes, I loved spoiling her. When she woke up from her nap the day I had to head back to Wisconsin, her eyes popped open, she looked up at me, got a huge smile on her face, booped me on the nose with her finger and started to giggle. Such a sweetheart!! I'll treasure every minute we spent together.

Isla we love you so... In the action shot of this picture Mae kept trying to grab at Isla. Then she tried crawling on top of her while she was napping.

It was the first time meeting Isla. Harrison was sitting on grandpa’s lap and I was standing in front of them holding Isla. I looked at Isla and then back to Harrison and I said “I dunno, Harrison. I’m kinda liking this…” and he burst into tears.

Dear Paul and Christa, My heart is breaking for you both for loss of precious Isla. You are such wonderful parents, all she knew was love and that is a beautiful thing. Thank you for sharing all those pictures and videos. She had such an amazing zeal for life and a huge capacity to love at such an early age. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Margaret Lachner
Christa and Paul, words can't describe the heartbreak felt for you both and across all family and friends that got to share time with Isla. I can only hope you can find strength in memories and stories of her as she lit up your lives. I'm sure even on the hardest days she is beaming brightly from above. Thoughts and prayers are with you from myself and family members.
I'm so sorry I missed that beautiful, contented child in real. Pics show the response to proud, loving parents (and grandparents!) and just lighten you up!
We couldn't help immediately falling in love love love with Isla. Her smile, her easy laughter and genuine happiness pulled us in. Her snuggles, bright eyed looks and outstretched hands sealed the deal. We fell for it all! We miss her soooo much! She was like a little flower blossoming more beautifully every day. Kathryn & Conrad, Grandma & Grandpa.
Dear Paul and Christa, Thank you for sharing your little sweetheart with us! Such a precious labor of love. The videos are a great way to help us feel we were right there with you – to enjoy such special moments and your heartfelt joy as a family. We’ve watched and re-watched the videos showing Isla’s delight for her activities and her accomplishments. We were especially tickled to see how she responded to music… immediate ‘dancing’ at such a young age. Please accept our sincere sympathy and affection for you and your extended family. Jack and Bobbie (friends of Kathryn and Conrad)
I am a friend of your mom's and have wanted to send a note of care and support to you. thank you for sharing a bit of her way too short life through the beautiful photos, videos, and memories. words can't do justice to the level of sorrow that goes with such deep deep loss, but you know that as you move forward one step at a time, she will forever be moving with you and within you. may the gifts that she brought you in her short time help give you needed strength to heal in whatever time you need as you (always) carry her with you.
Dear Paul and Christa, From the moment I met Isla, her smile captured my heart. She had a way of looking at me and grinning so hugely that just filled me with warmth and joy. I truly feel so lucky to have met you three. Truly the sweetest and toughest family. It was a huge joy to help advocate, care for and hang out a little bit with her at our visits. Thank you immensely for welcoming me to her team! And thank you also for the invitation here to celebrate her life. I am very moved and touched by how beautifully you have written her story. It is so special be able to see her light and smile, and the way she touched all whom she came across. I hope the love pouring through the stories and photos here will help provide solace during this very difficult time. Please accept my deepest condolences for the loss of your sweet, brave Isla. With much love, Sinzi
Paul and Christa, Thank you SO MUCH for this memorial site and all of the beautiful videos. I'm a close friend of Grandma Kathryn who absolutely adored Isla. She shared some photos with me, but these videos you shared really show the beautiful and funny girl Isla was. My faves are Irish jig, Baaaah, and Up!! :) She was so blessed to have you as parents...your great patience, skills, and love is obvious to us who never met her. I am so sorry she's not here with you, but I pray she's with all of the other angels playing in heaven. Hugs and prayers for you.
Your photos and videos are bittersweet. Thank you for sharing them - I can see what a sweetie Isla was. I am so very sorry for your loss. Take good care of yourselves.

Thank you for sending this link and for allowing me to get to know Isla through these memories and photos. She was truly amazing, wonderful and obviously brought an immense amount of joy to your lives. I am so deeply sorry for loss.
Such a beautiful smile, filled with love from her amazing parents! I only had the chance to see Isla in a few virtual meetings...always a smile, never a cry, and so content on Daddy's lap! More amazing memories in a year, than most have in a full lifetime. Praying for peace and comfort for your family.
So many beautiful pictures and memories. So sorry for your loss.
