Celebrating the Life of
January 23, 1974 — August 19, 2024
Hazel Elaine Ely, affectionately known as "Sweet Pea," passed away on August 19, 2024, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at the age of 50. Born on January 23, 1974, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Hazel lived a life marked by love, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family.
Hazel's career as a registered nurse spanned 14 years, during which she provided care and comfort to countless patients until she herself was diagnosed with cancer. Despite her illness, Hazel's spirit remained unbroken, and she continued to spread joy and kindness to everyone around her.
She was a devoted member of Greater Fellowship and Mount Zion Baptist Church, where she found great solace and community. Her faith was an essential part of her life and provided her with strength during her battle with cancer.
Hazel is survived by her loving husband of 8 years, Larry Williams of Maurepas; her mother, Laura Mae Victory of New Orleans; her siblings, Joshua Robertson, Maggie Wallace of Leesville, and Lillian Ebony. She was a cherished aunt to Hope Cushenberry (spouse Caleb Cushenberry), Quian Ely, and Grace Ely, and a beloved great-aunt to Caleb Cushenberry III and Cali Cushenberry. Her extended family and a host of friends will also miss her dearly. Hazel was preceded in death by her father and her brother, Reggie Ely.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor John. A committal service will follow in the family worship and fellowship building. Hazel was receiving care at the time of her passing and was surrounded by her loved ones.
During this difficult time, the family is asking for prayers instead of flowers or monetary contributions. Special thanks are extended to the staff at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and the Women’s Hospital Cancer Pavilion for their care and support.
The arrangements are being handled by Mount Zion Baptist, which has been a source of great support to Hazel and her family throughout her journey.
