Gordon F. Gibson, (82), from Winston-Salem, NC, formerly from Vernon, Ct, left this World for the Heavenly World on February 19,2024 at Willow Valley Nursing Home after battling Dementia and pneumonia.
Gordon, also known as Gordy, was born to Gordon Joseph and Pearl Fredericks Gibson, on April 21,1941 in Hartford, Ct. He was in 4H and loved raising goats. He played in the marching band, graduated from Rockville High School and UCONN. He started basic training in the US Air Force before receiving a medical discharge. He met Leona D. Wilson through the Grange. They got married February 3,1968 and had two daughters, Sharon Lea and Dawn Marie. The two later got divorced but stayed friends. He worked for the State of Ct. in the Land Acquisition Department buying land for the state. After retiring from the state he started his own business called Right Away Acquisitions and Management, working with private companies to acquire land rights. He worked on the Wapping Fair for over 50 years along with the Ct. Fair Association, including inspected other fairs. He worked on the Big E for many years. He was a former member of the Freemasons and Eastern Star. He was a member of the International Right of Way Association (IRWA) and South Windsor Jaycees. He was a past master and member of Vernon Grange and the State Grange at all levels. He was a former Chairman of the Vernon Conservation Commission. He was one of the founders of the Ct. Farmland Trust, and helped to preserve farms, including Elizabeth Montgomery's farm in Ct. He lobbied in Washington DC and Ct to preserve farmland. He was on the Board of Directors at the Strong Farm. He loved his trips to Alaska, San Francisco, California, many trips to Washington DC, Canada and annual trips to NC at Christmas time.
Gordon is predeceased by his parents and both sets of grandparents. His ex-wife Leona D. Wilson also predeceased him.
Gordon is survived by his two daughters, Sharon Lea Gibson (Jack Coltey,Jr), from Winston-Salem, NC and Dawn M. Vallieres (Ken Sheffield), from Winston-Salem, NC. He is also survived by six grandchildren and one step granddaughter, Gregory Holmes (Alexis), from Cape Coral, Fl; Christina Foster (Chris), from Amston,Ct.; Justin Tarr (Jillian), from Brooksville, Fl.; Patrick Coltey (Theresa), from Lewisville, NC.; Katherine Coltey (Jacob), from Winston-Salem, NC.; Gabrielle Vallieres from Winston-Salem, NC.; and step granddaughter Danielle Coltey from Winston-Salem, NC. He is survived by fifteen great grandchildren, Izabella, Nadsir, Anastasia, Ezekiel (Christina) from Ct.; Ethan, Aiden (Danielle); Magnolia (Katherine); Emery (Patrick), all from NC; Emmett, Delilah, Oliver, Sonny (Gregory); Amelia, Grace, and Avery (Justin), all from Fl. He is also survived by a few cousins.
He liked watching British comedies like “Keeping up Appearances” and “As Time Goes By”. He liked the Keystone Cops”. And the movie, “It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World”. He let his two daughters talk him into raising two baby chickens as pets. He also loved his fur babies, Red, Patches, Mittens, and Horace, all who predeceased him.
