Celebrating the Life of
October 26, 1942 — March 7, 2021
We celebrate the life of Glenville Anthony March; beloved husband and patriarch, supportive father, faithful brother, compassionate grandfather and loyal friend.
Glenville Anthony March, Sr.
October 26, 1942 – March 7, 2021
Glenville Anthony March was born on October 26, 1942 in Kingston, Jamaica West Indies to Cecil March and Hildred Rhoden.
The oldest of four boys, Glenville, along with his older sisters, Gloria and Claudette, took his responsibility as a leader in his family very seriously. When his mother and father immigrated to England early in his life, Glenville personally ensured that his brothers Clifton, Cecil, and Errol continued and excelled in their education. He went on to become a tailor’s apprentice until he became a tailor years later. Subsequently, Glen left that profession to become an accountant for the Agricultural Ministry of Jamaica where he met a lifelong friend, Leopold Henry, a friendship that lasted sixty years.
With his hard work and dedication to family, he was rewarded by meeting his lifelong love, Avis Louise March, a woman that not only captured his eyes, but his heart, as well. Avis, a country girl, met Glen, a city boy and they were inseparable. They were married in Jamaica on November 16, 1963. Glen and Avis worked very hard, took a chance and immigrated to the Bronx, New York with their sons, Glenville, Jr and Garnett in 1969. Staying true to their philosophy of education and providing opportunity for their futures, Glen made sure his boys got the best education that he and his devoted wife could afford. Their vigilance and dedication to their sons enabled them to become great and successful men; Dr. Glenville March, MD, a world-renowned doctor and Garnett March, a record executive. Both went on to have lovely families of their own.
Throughout his twenty-five years in New York, he worked as an accountant for a community development agency called, Christian Community in Action where he managed New York City contracts for social service programs like home attendants, meal on wheels, a senior citizen center, along with many other programs. Glenville was an active member of his church community and always gave his talents for money management to the Lord. He joined Agape Church of God with his spiritual coach, Avis. They quickly became a part of the Agape community and Glen became a trustee and used his accounting skills in the service of the church. In 2002, Glen and Avis retired from cold and icy New York to be closer to their sons and grandchildren in warm and sunny Los Angeles.
“Grandpa”, as his five grandchildren lovingly call him, was always present and loved his grandchildren. He and his wife attended as many sporting events, school events, and birthday dinners that they possible could. From traveling with the softball team, to watching countless football games and tennis matches, Grandpa was always in the stands cheering on his beloved grandchildren. His grandchildren were his priority and he always had time and words of wisdom for them.
After coming to Los Angeles they adjusted quickly to the west coast lifestyle and found a new church home with the West Valley Community Church, where they were able to add value as experienced elders in the church. Glen continued to use his accounting skills in the service of God, and ensured that WVCC’s books were clean and up to date.
Glen was always a generous man who loved to sing all genres of music. He would sing in church, in the bathroom and was always known for his deep baritone voice and easy smile. He was very intelligent and very quick to recall world history, sports, music and popular culture. A welcoming man, he was always well liked by people around him and found it easy to connect with all walks of life from Presidents of the United States to the common man. Glen always added value to the lives of others when he had an opportunity, and he always afforded individual’s dignity and support while doing so. He learned a lot of this behavior from his angelic wife and the rock of his life Avis. He never made a decision without her, and Avis, steadfast and true, never left his side.
Glenville died peacefully in the hospital after praying with his wife on March 7, 2021.
Glenville is predeceased by his parents Cecil and Hildred and his oldest sister, Claudette.
