Some years back, my cousins and I had the opportunity to sit down and reflect upon on how respective paths to the men we’ve became and ongoing journey towards the men we aspire to be. Amidst this heartfelt exchange , we found ourselves reminiscing on the time our childhood years and the good times we spent together, where one remarkable soul stood prominently in our shared recollections-My loved aunty Frida. Why? You see as far as I can remember, I always looked forward to summers breaks in Yaounde in which my aunty will invite us all over to spend time with her and experience what will be joy filled and memorable holidays. She will accommodate us by creating such a great atmosphere for us to enjoy ourselves and one another in way that will serve a lasting impact within our respective lives in which we very much apparent during the course of our conversation. “Our fun aunty” we affectionately dubbed her but was more than just a loving aunt, she was almost like a superhero type of figure to us. A literal SUPERWOMAN! A determined and driven woman who grew up in patriarchal or lack of better terms male dominated family but was able to empower herself to archive and accomplish remarkable success at such a time that was relatively uncommon. And best believe she was wore that with a sense pride that was unapologetic but humble which as I kid, I could only enjoy and recognise her as my “fun aunty” but in retrospect, I admire and appreciate her for it and will continue to. Despite her health issues that led to her unfortunate demise, it should be widely understood that my aunty lived a full life with a trailblazing spirit-On her own terms and she enjoyed every bit of it which is something I will continue to cherish and forever hold her in high regard for. To bring it back to that conversation with my cousins, this was our collectively in our appreciation for her. It is said that “In life, we alive to the degree that we serve” and this special human being did just that and for this I am not only grateful for the the impact she will forever have and myself and many others but that she is in better place and can rest peacefully. Love you and until we meet again🕊️ Emene
