Celebrating the Life of
June 10, 1958 — March 8, 2024
We are deeply saddened to share that our mother, Etsuko Tsurukawa (Taniguchi) has passed away peacefully in her home in San Francisco, CA on March 8, 2024. Etsuko was born on June 10, 1958 in San Francisco, CA to parents Hirofumi and Sadako Taniguchi. She was a very proud member in the ROTC at Galileo High School, graduated in 1976, and later worked at the San Francisco VA Hospital for many years. She was an active member of the Church of Perfect Liberty (PL Church), training to become a "Hokyoshi", participating in youth outreach, and was an incredibly supportive and bright member of the community. She met her husband Takehiko through a mutual friend at PL Church, and they were happily married on September 13, 1981. Together they had three children, Megumi, Keith, and Miyuki, and later adopted many dogs (Jiro, Kuma, Gohan, Baloo, Kojiro, Musashi, Nanako) - of course not all at the same time, although she probably would have if able.
She will always be remembered for her big smile and warm, loving personality. She was a strong advocate for children with disabilities, and was always proactive in her youngest daughter, Miyuki's education. Her social media was overfilled with pictures of her most cherished things in life, her family and dogs...LOTS OF DOGS, especially Golden Retrievers. She enjoyed watching marathon sessions of TV shows like Castle, 911, Rookie, and Law and Order SVU with her husband, while cuddling with her furry cat "grandsons" Bobby or Wally on the couch.
She is survived by Takehiko Tsurukawa (husband), Megumi Tsurukawa (eldest daughter), Keith Tsurukawa (son), Miyuki Tsurukawa (youngest daughter), Sachiko Maekawa (sister), Atsushi Maekawa (nephew), Joji Maekawa (nephew), and May Maekawa (niece).

I lost a dear friend. A colleague in the ROTC program. My heart is broken. I am still in shock. I have no words. Etsuko Tsurukawa (Etsuko Taniguchi) I will never forget you and what you brought to the Galileo’s High School ROTC program world and our long time friendship. Training and working with Etsuko back in the Fall of 1973 to the Spring of 1975 was one of the best moments in my life. I will never forget her ability to learn and play the tenor drum, snare drum and base drum with her incredible musical gift. Etsuko outstanding and humble work in the ROTC program left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her. Rest in peace to this incredible woman, mother, wife, leader, sister, co-worker and friend. I love you my friend and miss you more than ever. Please accept my deepest condolences to the family. Ed

Since school, Etsuko has been a cherished friend to many of us for fifty years. We played drums together, marched in parades and danced at school parties. Besides being a talented drummer, she loved music - the Monkies, Davy Jones and the Carpenters. We all went to her beautiful traditional wedding to her loving husband, Tak. Etsuko's children also precious and loving. All of us (her friends from high school) will miss her laugh. Her smile. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our lifelong friend.

I remember my friend Etsuko always smiling like in this picture. No matter if she was having a bad day or a good one, she always had that take my picture smile. She was always willing to help others, even when it wasn't her job. When she moved from Quality Mgmt to Radiology, I would drop by her office, just to say hello or to check-up on her making sure she went to lunch or breaks. I would get on her saying, "the gov't isn't paying you for your time". And all she would do was giggle at me and tell me I was crazy. When she went out on disability, I was sad thinking there goes another friend leaving me at VA, but I understood her health was more important. Over the years we kept in contact with one another, she called me her Lil Sis and she was my Big Sis. I will miss my Big Sis and she will always have a special place in my heart. I love you Etsuko (Big Sis), until we see each other in heaven rest in peace. My condolences to the family, may God be with you during your time of grief, and I'll be praying for you. Love Cassandra
I never knew anyone who had anything negative to say about Etsuko. She was very much liked and loved within our small clique of ROTC friends. ❤️
