Celebrating the Life of
July 22, 1938 — September 30, 2024
Dixie Lee Schminkey, 86, passed away at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on September 30th, 2024. Dixie was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on July 22nd, 1938 to Harold and Lillian (Phillips) Terry. Dixie was a wonderful matriarch who took great pride in her family, and will be missed dearly.
Dixie was married to her loving husband, Harold Schminkey, for 57 and a half years before he passed away in 2015. Dixie and Harold were united in marriage July 12, 1957 in Cedar Rapids. Dixie and Harold raised their children and grandchildren in the Christian faith. As stated in 1 Corinthians 13:13, “...these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” Dixie loved her whole family fiercely and without conditions. Even in her last few days, Dixie spoke high praise of her kids and grandkids; bragging about them up until the very end.
Dixie is survived by her sister, Susan Hope Terry; her four children: Randy (Janet) Schminkey, Faith (Kenneth) Blackburn, Hope Young, and April Schminkey; her thirteen grandchildren: Adam Schminkey, Eden (Schminkey) Brown, Raven (Schminkey) Matheny, Gabe Schminkey, Alyssa (Blackburn) Hagans, Brenda (Blackburn) Warren, Michelle Blackburn, Joshua Osten, Jessica Osten, James (Jr.) Young, Justin Young, Jason Young, and Jolene Young; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Dixie is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and six sisters.
Dixie enjoyed spending time with family. Around the holidays, you could often find her in the kitchen making her famous chocolate peanut butter balls, a recipe that has been passed down to the younger generations. She enjoyed creating a variety of crafts, including paper mache jewelry. She loved collecting beanie babies and other stuffed animals. Dixie passed her love of cappuccinos to several family members; she often bonded with her grandchildren over cappuccinos when they spent time with her in the summers. Dixie was the epitome of love, safety, and happiness. Dixie’s family is glad she is at peace resting in heaven with her beloved husband, Harold and her gracious creator, Jesus Christ.
