Dawn Dozier, 56, made her journey back to the Essence on December 30, 2023 and took her final breath in the arms of her loving son, Solomon in the Bronx where they lived.
Dawn was born on September 2, 1967, in the Bronx to Alvin Draper and Suzanne Dozier. She and her sister, Shoshannah, attended schools there including John F. Kennedy high school where they made lifelong friends. Upon graduating, she immediately enlisted into the US Navy and served four years before her honorable discharge in 1990. She soon gained employment at 1199SEIU’s Pension Dept. where she worked until her last day.
In 1991, she met Evan and began a life together. She lovingly embraced the role of mother to his son and auntie to Shoshannah’s children. On December 28, 1998, Dawn married Evan and by December 31st of the same year their son, Solomon, was born. Although their union eventually ended in divorce, their co-parenting duties helped to shape their son into the responsible young man he is today.
They invested in all his interests and desires. This led him to mixed martial arts at the age of 12. By age 18 Solomon became a black belt of Gin Jan Do and began teaching other students. Seeing the need to improve her health, Dawn soon became one of his students. Over time, she earned belt rankings and was scheduled for promotion to orange belt this year. Her hobbies include,
Her bond with Solomon was further strengthened by his commitment to stay home and attend college at Lehman College where he earned his bachelor's degree in Kinesiology in 2023 which was a momentous experience and accomplishment. He is part of the fifth generation of college graduates in Evan's bloodline.
She is survived by her son, Solomon, stepson, her mother, Suzanne, her maternal sister, Shoshannah along with niece, Shoshannah and nephews, Mordecai and Zephania. She also has paternal brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews that will all miss her.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Dawn’s life by using this page to share stories, photos and other heartfelt contributions for Solomon to enjoy in the days and years to come.
Please share a photo or video, or post a heartfelt condolence to the family.

Dawn was such a wonderful spirit. When we first met at 1199, she always greeted me with a big smile and a Hey my sister. Her big smile and warm heart will forever be etched in my memories
Dawn I want to say thank for your support & encouragement when I stared selling my Scented Butter. I remember sharing with you at work 1 day, I asked would you please help me send a video to dying Godmother. It took a few takes, because I started crying, in between the retakes we both laughed, because I was mocking Wendy William's favorite saying “How You Doing?”’ Someone my Godmother & I would often laugh at. Once finished you gave me a hug to say it was a beautiful gesture & she is going to love it. I can truly say I’ve seen you mad. Always with a smile. You love to call everyone Sis or Brother. I loved your spirit. Always willing to help out, assist, support & encouragement. Solomon, you had a Beautiful Mom. Although I didn’t personally know you. I knew you, because your Mom talked about you so much. I knew you well. Because of the Compassion your Mom share of being your Mother. You are truly Blessed. Sorry to hear of her sudden passing. But, I truly feel from our past conversations about you, she prepared you to be the best you can be in this world with or without her. My Deepest Condolences to You & Your Immediate Family & 1199 Family. 1199 Staff & Members are Mourning & Praying for you & family during this time of Bereavement. Sincerely Rosa
You always had a smile on your face, such a outgoing positive personality, who truly cared about her retirees. Such a bright light for all that worked with you. Although that light has dimmed here on earth, it will remain bright in our minds and hearts.❤ You will truly be missed🕊
What and how I am feeling is hard to put into words. I met Dawn, Shoshannah (aka Mighty Mouth), and Ema when they moved to Walton Ave. I can't and don't believe Dawn (aka shacarr) has gained her wings. I wish I could have given her one last hug. Rest easier my friend. Simone & Sylvia Godfrey.
From the moment we met in 2000 at 1199, Dawn's amazing spirit and infectious smile radiated a room. I miss working with you Dawn and enjoyed our conversations. You taught me how to look within myself. My deepest condolences to the family.
Dawn I am truly going to miss the many laughs and conversations we had over the years working at 1199. Your smile that lit up any room will now shine bright in eternal peace in heaven. Solomon my heart and prayers are forever with you. God bless

This is a picture from 2009 at the 1199SEIU Funds Holiday Party. We always had a fun time hanging out together since High School and I will always cherish the many memories in my heart.
It is somehow difficult to express my sadness over the loss of my friend, Dawn. Each memory of her is a joyous one. People sometimes are not aware of the impact they have of your life. I first met Dawn at 1199NBF. She was one of the members of The Sisters, a group of powerful women who all positively impacted my life in one way or another. Dawn alsways reminded me to be confident and to love who I am. She was a true reminder of the beauty of self-love. Dawn and I would usually try to determine if we were related. I told her that there were Doziers north of The Chesapeake Bay, and Doziers south of the Bay. I would often tell her that we both had to have roots in the southern part of Virginia because it is home to some of the most beautiful Doziers in this country. I am heartbroken by her loss, but am grateful to have a known a fellow Dozier who was sweet as pie, smart as a whip, courageous and bold, and not afraid to be One of One. Rest in eternal heavenly peace, Dawn. My condolences to her son, family, and friends. With Love, Julia Dozier
