Celebrating the Life of
June 23, 1966 — February 5, 2024
Thomas David "Dave" Rosen departed much too soon on February 5, 2024.
Dave Rosen was born on June 23, 1966 in Paradise, California (but he never let that stop him). He grew up in the North Idaho wilderness where he hunted, fished, trapped, prospected, and explored the forest with his father and siblings. He had a deep love for exploring and discovering which stayed with him all his life. He developed a love for music and learned to play guitar and sing, something he would be known for all his life and become fondly known as "The Singing Cowboy."
Dave started a career in truck driving and heavy equipment operation, and quickly came to be known as one of the most reliable drivers in the state of Idaho.
Dave married the love of his life in 1989 and they had two children in 1994 and 1996. Dave dedicated his life to providing for his family and found enormous joy in raising his kids. He spent countless days sharing his passions with his family and passed many of those on to his own kids.
After a lifetime of being fascinated with airplanes and flying, Dave decided to make learning to fly his mid-life crisis. Aviation quickly became one of his greatest loves. He continued to pursue this passion for the rest of his life: getting his private pilot's license, buying a plane of his own, and getting his instrument rating. Dave particularly loved backcountry flying and the community of pilots that came with it.
Dave was known by all who loved him for his infectious laughter, the smile that took over his whole face, the way he could share a secret with just a glance and a grin, and his ability to discuss any topic at length with great passion and enthusiasm. He was a loyal friend, a supportive husband, a dedicated father, and so much more.
A short and incomplete list of Dave's hobbies and passions: aviation, guitar, singing, hiking, hunting, fishing, mining, cowboying, traveling, exploring, physics, mechanics, outer space, science, history, writing, storytelling, chess, building, animals, Idaho backcountry, guns, reloading, Star Trek, craft beer, and teaching others about any of the above.
There will be no formal services. In Dave's own words, he did not want his loved ones "sitting around crying." Please remember him fondly in music, in the forest, and in the skies.
Please share a photo or video, or post a heartfelt condolence to the family.

Dave and his niece Crystal
My deepest condolences on your loss. Losing someone close to us is never easy, and my heart goes out to you during this difficult time. I remember the one and only time I met Uncle Dave, and the impression he left on me was profound. Over the years, Uncle Dave and I exchanged a few letters and messages on social media. I always looked forward to hearing from him, and I had hoped to meet him someday. When he told me he was coming to California, I was thrilled, but also nervous. I didn't know what to expect. As soon as I saw him, I felt a sense of comfort. There was a twinkle in his eye that reminded me of my own dad, and I knew I was in good company. We spent a couple hours talking, and he shared stories of his adventures, his family, and his memories of my dad. I could feel his compassion and honesty in every word he spoke, and I was grateful for the opportunity to learn more about my own family. But what struck me the most was the love and pride he had for his own family. He spoke of each one of you with such joy and tenderness, and I could see how much you all meant to him. He was a great storyteller too, and I felt like a child again, listening to him weave tales of his life and experiences. When it was time for us to part ways, I felt a sense of warmth and connection that I hadn't expected. I had gone into our meeting with some anxiety, but Uncle Dave put me at ease and filled my heart with love and understanding. I will always cherish that morning we spent together, as uncle and niece, and I hope that his memory will bring you comfort and peace in the days to come.
Sending all my love to you Stephanie, Crystal, & Josh. I didn’t know Dave super well, but I always remember him making us split into laughter when we were kids. His sense of humor was flawless and his love for his family was always present. ❤️
