Celebrating the Life of
July 26, 1946 — July 10, 2023
On July 10, 2023, the world witnessed a gentle fading of its brilliance as we bid adieu to an extraordinary soul, Claudia Serles, who graced us with her presence for 76 years and we all could have used another lifetime with her. Claudia's odyssey through life was adorned with the delights of sailing, a deep affection for feline companions, an unwavering patriotism, and a profound influence on the realm of modern technology. All intricately woven together much like the threads of her cherished crochet creations.
A devoted boater, Claudia's heart was at home upon the open waters. For more than three decades, her sailboat was both her sanctuary where she would find peace in the gentle caress of the wind and the rhythm of the waves. She shared her love for the water with all who knew her, leaving an impression of tranquility that will forever be associated with her name. Her love extended beyond the water's edge to her feline friends, embodying the spirit of a true cat lover. The memories of her many furry companions that have passed before her are a shining light to the nurturing soul that she was. As she embarks on her new journey, we find comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with her beloved Tre cat, a faithful companion of over two decades.
Claudia's professional journey was no less extraordinary. Her tenure at UCSF Medical Center spanned over a decade, leaving an indelible mark on the lives she touched in the Prepare Department. She meticulously ensured that the groundwork for countless medical procedures were flawlessly set. Many would go to her for tech help knowing she was just the right person to fix any problem that came up. Claudia generously shared her expertise as a phlebotomist at Oakland Children's hospital for a few years as well. This was a reflection of her deep commitment to the well-being of our youngest community members. Yet, her influence extended even further, contributing significantly to the advancements in modern technology that we benefit from today.
Claudia, a loving mother of three, held her family close to her heart – two daughters and a son. Her heart swelled with pride as she watched her family flourish, and her legacy lives on through her four cherished grandchildren. Among the vibrant threads woven into Claudia Serles' life tapestry, a radiant strand shone brilliantly throughout the years – a profound and unbreakable connection she shared with both her granddaughters Tiffany, and twin sister Stephanie. Their bond transcended conventional roles, blooming into a treasured and distinct relationship that embodied the essence of a parent-child dynamic. Having been blessed with 33 years of their grandmother's presence, Stephanie and Tiffany were enveloped in an extraordinary and enduring companionship, cultivated through a lifetime spent together. Their grandmother's influence extended far beyond the boundaries of typical grandparenthood; she was a constant pillar of strength, a guiding star, and a wellspring of unconditional love for both of them. Their shared journey was punctuated by a closeness that radiated to all fortunate enough to witness it. The girl's interactions with Claudia were a mix of heartfelt talks about Jesus, their fondness for cats, and the lifetime of memories they shared. There was comfort found and insight in each other's presence, sharing not just the happy moments but also navigating through life's challenges together. Claudia's guiding presence provided stability during life's highs and lows, and her encouragement shaped them into the woman they have become today.
Claudia's tastes were as diverse as her passions. From savoring the delights of spicy Japanese cuisine to indulging in a classic milkshake, her palate was as adventurous as her spirit. Lemon-flavored treats held a special place in her heart, a small but significant symbol of the sweetness she brought to those around her. Among the pages of her life, Claudia found adventure and excitement in the words of books. Audible narratives filled her days, with Brad Taylor's stories capturing her imagination and transporting her to distant realms. Her ever-curious mind found comfort in the embrace of literature, further enriching her already vibrant life.
In the journey of Claudia Serles' life, her fervor for creativity and the joy of sharing blossomed through the delicate artistry of her crocheting. With the rhythmic dance of her hands, she transformed vibrant threads of yarn into exquisite masterpieces that not only provided warmth, but also emanated a heartfelt embrace of love. Crocheting was more than a hobby for Claudia; it was a way for her to weave her affection into every loop and pattern. Each piece was a labor of love, a tangible expression of her devotion to her friends and family. With every stitch, Claudia infused her heart and soul into her creations. It wasn't just about the finished product; it was the process that brought Claudia happiness. The quiet moments spent with her crochet hook and yarn allowed her to find tranquility and focus, a way to channel her energy and creativity into something beautiful. Her creations were a testament to her patience, dedication, and the meticulous care she put into everything she did.
As we bid farewell to Claudia, let us hold onto the memories of her. In her memory, let us strive to embody her kindness, her spirit of adventure through books, and her unyielding passion for life. As she sets sail on her final voyage, may she find eternal peace alongside her cherished companions, and may her legacy continue to inspire us all. - By Tiffany Chesser

Beautifully written, she truly touched so many lives! I remember our trip together to Santa Cruz for Tiff’s birthday, so many laughs on the long drive there and back! She lit up anytime she shared stories with me about her family! The day we spent cleaning the boat together, she shared why she held onto things for sentimental memories for her girls. So blessed to have known and created memories with such a wonderful woman! May she rest in peace and be a Angel and watch over all of us who need her!
This is beautifully written and describes Claudia exactly as the package of love that she really was. We will always remember Claudia. She was so welcoming when we arrived at the marina with our two daughters 5 years and 10 years old. She was instantly their grandmother and from there on she was always there for us. RIP our dearest Claudia. We all love you 🌷🌹🌻💝

Dear Claudia, My colleague, friend, and a honorary work grandmother, I love you so much. I miss you. I’ll never forget the night I visit you before you pass. You’ve been the light of my life and everyone’s life at UCSF Prepare Clinic. I’ll always cherish the memories I shared with you, whether it’s food, my travels, my partner Yarnel, and my family. I hope that you’re living your best life in Heaven along with Tre. I also loved the time you shared how much you love, Japantown’s , ramen spot and you paid for me and Yarnel’s lunch. Thank you for that. Theres so much more memories I wanna share of you but just know that you’ve made an impact on my life. I will never forget you. I love you, Jannie

From my first breath to your last breath, you have been by my side 🤍🥺 Words will never be enough, but you set the bar high in all that you have done. You officially got to take a 2 week break from work here on Earth and now you are working your joyful heart for the Lord in Heaven. I thank the Lord for you raising Tiff and I from birth till now. I say Grandma, but you were truly our Mom. I am grateful for every second with you. I can find peace knowing that Jesus was your Lord and Savior and it was so apparent that He embraced you with only His supernatural peace in your last hours here. I can be excited for you, knowing that you’re seeing the jewels of heavens gates, walking the streets of gold, smelling the endless flowers, and amazed by all the magnificent colors in your new home. You will truly admire an appreciate every single thing! As Eric and I adjust to life without you here, we will hold each other's hand a little bit tighter, speak our words all the more lovingly, and see the beauty and awe of each day just that much more, all because that is what you have encouraged us to do over the years. We will honor you in our future and be sure that your name will never dull. I will proudly wear my middle name as your first name, Stephanie Claudia Bolin. With that, I will always be your ‘Stef’🤍 Save us a seat in Heaven, see you soon🤍We love you forever Grandma!🕊️
I always had a nice time talking to grandma. I very much enjoyed having her live with me and her daughter (my mother) in her last few moments of life. Even though she thought she was a burden, she never was. Helping her get through the hardest days and bringing a bit of joy was always my favorite part of the day. She has a great sense of humor and I will always be thankful she was interested in what I had to say or show her. I loved talking about art with her, I just wish I had seen more of hers. She always shared her amazing crochet with me. I could never wrap my head around how she had the patience to do that. My mom and I were left with a hole in our lives, not having her here. It was always fun seeing our cat (her favorite) Binx, being her best buddy and getting into shenanigans with her cords and wires. I hope she enjoyed my company as much as I enjoyed hers. I will miss her deeply. I can say, she was one of the best people I’ve ever known.

We had some good times over the past year and I wish there could’ve been more.
My Mom was my inspiration, my role model and my best friend. Her inspiring steadfast devotion to all of her jobs, hobbies, friends and family inspired me to keep going through thick or thin, good or not so good events in my life. I accomplished so much with her support, she always told me I could do anything I put my mind to and my back into. She raised an independent woman who did and does not need anyone to take care of her just to be there to encourage and ride the wave of life with. My Mom’s independence and strong nature transcends to my children they are self sufficient, and strong, independent, passionate about their own art medium , love to crochet and of course have a powerful love for cats just like their grandmother . I have my moms love of music, literature, culture, crochet/knitting and graphic design all of which I use in my everyday life and passed onto my students and adult friends. As mentioned, she will leave a big hole in many aspects of many lives but because she supported all of us so vehemently we/I will be even stronger in the rest of my life’s adventures, journeys and endeavors. I will keep my moms legacy alive as I continue to demonstrate her empathy, support and example setting for anyone I encounter .
