Celebrating the Life of
September 13, 1967 — June 17, 2023
Christy Ann Cheyne, 55, of Hood River, suffered a stroke and passed away surrounded by her family and friends on June 17, 2023, in Portland, Oregon. She was born on September 13, 1967, to Larry and Sandra (Blatter) Cheyne in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
Christy’s passion for wildlife and forests was woven into her daily life and 35-year career with the Forest Service as a Wildlife Biologist (Klamath National Forest), District Ranger (Malheur National Forest), and Deputy Area Manager (Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area). During that time, she committed her professional life to ecological restoration, social diversity, integrating people and natural resources, and quality management of public lands, including her studying the northern spotted owl, and restoring dry forest ecosystems and wildlife habitat. While a single parent and working full time for the Forest Service as a wildlife biologist, Christy returned to college to complete her bachelor’s degree at Southern Oregon University. She was a model for many young women working in the field, and mentoring her employees and all those she supervised was very important to her. Christy received the Forest Service National Law Enforcement and Investigation Outstanding Line Support Award in April of 2017 for her efforts to keep employees safe during the Malheur occupation.
Christy loved to go hiking and head off on adventures. At home, she gardened and often transplanted flowers and perennials into her new gardens as she moved around Oregon. Christy loved animals and filled her house with cats, dogs, and other critters that were rescues, strays, or adopted from friends and family.
More than anything, Christy adored her children, Leslie and Brendan, and loved playing with and babysitting for her granddaughter Alyce. Even as she pursued promotions and new positions with the Forest Service, she told her children she would always be within a day’s drive so she could visit them regularly.
Christy is survived by: her children, Leslie Taylor and Robert Gasser of Ukiah, and Brendan Woodbridge of Seal Rock; her granddaughter Alyce Gasser; her parents; her brother and sister–in-law Larry and Diane Cheyne of Salem, her partner Mark Penninger of Baker City, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, Scott Cheyne; her paternal grandparents Lawrence and Bessie (Babcock) Cheyne; and her maternal grandparents Robert and Alyce (Backstrom) Blatter.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you support her celebration of life events.

I am so sadden to hear about Christy. She was the most loving and kind person to humans or fur babies. I worked with her for years on the Malheur and was suppose to detail to CRG but COVID hit so I ended up not going. I will miss your gentle soul and your beautiful smile, but I will always remember you. Fly high and rest easy, until we meet again. ❤️Patty
I loved you more than you ever knew Christy. I miss you terribly. 💔
I was fortunate enough to meet Christy. I always loved how her kindness held a room like big arms wrapped around saying you belong here, you’re welcome here. I’ve been lucky to also meet Leslie. She has always had that same loving hold. I have heard amazing stories of Christy and her accomplishments and while always floored I’m never surprised by the strength and kindness she brought from herself and to others. I will forever look at her as one of the people in life that touched my heart and made me want to be a kinder person.

It was truly a privilege to work alongside Christy. Having met is Middle Leadership we developed a friendship that I will always cherish. She always had concern and compassion for those she knew. I had the privilege of watching her manage some of the most exciting times on the Malheur NF. The Stewardship contract, collaborative process, refuge takeover, and everyday eastside resource management business are but a few. We had a special routine of always meeting and going out to lunch at the Outpost. Her favorite go to lunch was French Dip sandwich with sweet potato fries. Her love for her children, and pets were always a topic she loved to share. Truly an amazing woman and one I was blessed to call Friend!!!

I was blessed to work with Christy on the Klamath for some years in the early 2000s. This photo was taken at a Mexican joint in Yreka where we used to meet and have fun over margaritas. I always looked up to Christy and was inspired by her strength, kindness, and incredible intelligence and intuition as a field biologist, supervisor, and leader. Christy gave so much of herself and brought joy and comfort to so many others. I’ll never forget her and I look forward to sharing in how she lives on through Leslie, Brendan, her granddaughter, and the whole family. 🩷❤️

Mom loved her Kaylee dog and would take her on many adventures! This was taken in March 2017 on our way back home from a trip visiting our family in Klamath Falls. We stopped for a pit stop to walk Kaylee and to show mom the Painted Hills for her first time. One of my favorite days spent with my mom on a road trip and taking detours to appreciate our beautiful planet.
