Celebrating the Life of
December 6, 1938 — February 12, 2026
Carrie Jones McClain, 87, of Columbus, Georgia, went home with Jesus on February 12, 2026, to rest high on that mountain.
Carrie had a face that reflected her heart. Her kindness showed before she ever spoke a word. There was warmth in her presence, and just enough spark to let you know she was also a spitfire when she needed to be.
Deeply rooted in her faith, Carrie lived her life guided by love, compassion, and devotion. Family was everything to her. It was the center of her world and the measure by which she made her decisions. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who poured herself wholeheartedly into those she loved.
She was a natural caregiver, not only in her home but in her profession. Carrie worked in the medical field until the age of 70, spending her life tending to others with steady hands and a gentle spirit. Caring for people was not just her job; it was her calling.
At home, her love showed up in her garden and in her kitchen. Being in the garden was her therapy. If it could grow, she would plant it. She nurtured flowers and vegetables the same way she nurtured people, patiently and faithfully. No one ever came to her house and left hungry. Her chicken and dumplings were legendary among family and friends, a dish that tasted like comfort and belonging in every bowl.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnie Ross McClain; her son, Stephen Wayne Freeman; her stepsons, Murrell Jakob McClain and Scott Allen McClain.
She is survived by her daughter, Holly A. McClain of Columbus, Georgia; her stepson, Johnie “Jack” McClain III; her cherished grandchildren, Gabrielle Johnson, Giovanni McClain, Jake Olheiser, Kayla Hoese, Megan Spalding, Stephanie Freeman, Christopher Freeman, and Matthew Freeman; her beloved niece, Cheryl Wiggins, who lovingly considered Carrie a second mother; and her nephew, Jason Jackson.
Carrie will be remembered as kind, loving, faithful, and strong. The love she gave so freely continues to live on in the family she raised and the many lives she touched.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:23
A celebration of life will be held at a later time.
